There are dozens of blogging tips that I could give you, but the objective of this page is not to overwhelm you with what you should be doing, but more to provide one or two hints on how to make your blog seem more professional, and how to make best use from it.
DEFAULT WORDPRESS PAGES
The first thing that most people using Wordpress blogs have to do, but that most don’t do, is to change the default pages provided with your blog. These are the ‘Hello World’ and ‘About’ pages. My advice is:
- Hello World: Delete it. Go to ‘Manage’ then ‘Pages’. You will see the ‘Hello World’ page listed there. Click on delete. You don’t need it and don’t want it. Wordpress provide it to allow you to proclaim your blog to the world, but anybody who uses it is regarded as a bit ‘naff’ or a beginner at the game. You might very well be both, but you don’t have to advertise the fact.
- About: Change it. Say something about yourself to let visitors know why and with what authority you are writing your blog. Here is some suggested content:
- Your name and any personal information you want to provide, such as age, marital status, children and education.
- Your job or profession, and any specific interests you have. Some people like reading this information.
- Why you have your blog. What it’s purpose is. Why do you enjoy blogging. Is it part of a marketing strategy or are you just blogging for enjoyment or because you are lonely. Many people are, and blogging is a great way out of it for them. It is good therapy.
- Any specific experience or qualifications you have in your subject. This is what people really want to know so don’t hesitate to tell them what you are good at, and how you got good at it! But tell the truth – it will soon become apparent that you are not the expert on SEO or dog training that you claim to be.
- Any contact details you want to provide.
DO NOT:
- Advertise or try to sell anything on this page
- Provide your website URLs
Your ‘About’ page is intended to provide information about you personally to readers of your blog, and not to act as an advertising medium or links page. Many people like to know a bit more about the person they are visiting, such as if they are married, what their experience is and why they should take notice of what you are saying.
If you try to sell them anything here, or blatantly advertise, they will think less of you and possibly click elsewhere. Provide genuine information about yourself, and you can even make a few statements that let them know your politics or views on any topical subjects, though even these are likely best left to another page you have specifically designed for the purpose.
PERSONALIZE YOUR SIDEBAR
You can personalize your sidebar but it takes a bit of HTML or CSS knowledge. I don’t know if you can do this with your blog on wordpress.com, but I don’t think so, so read the next tip. Go to ‘Presentation’ then ‘Themes’, then ‘Theme Editor’. On the right you will see the elements that make up your blog, and go to ‘Sidebar’. If you have a three column blog, you will have two sidebars, but you should know which your main one.
is Clicking on ‘Sidebar’ will bring up the Sidebar coding, and you can change that to suit you. You can add a section with your website links, links to your other blogs, and anything else you would use a sidebar for. I use mine to provide an ‘opt-in’ form and also a link to an affiliate product connected to blogs.
DRIVE WORDPRESS FROM YOUR WEBSITE
You can download website to your hard disk from Wordpress.org and then upload the software to your website. The easiest way is to use ftp software, and if you need advice on this, I can provide it to you. Visit my blog on Blog on Blog for links to the ftp software and then email if you need help to get it working on your website. Wordpress advertise that it takes five minutes: big laugh!! It took me at least ten!
Once you are running your blog from your own website you can customize it in any way you want. Anything goes, and you use any of the thousands of plugins available online. The standard Wordpress is fine for beginners, and those still learning, but if you have reached my website then you are ready to progress. It is completely free to download and get up and running, and most templates and plugins are also free.
If you have a problem getting it going on your own website, then drop me an email and will install it for you for $15. I will need only your login details for your website control panel. I won’t need your Wordpress download since I can use my own, so if you want to avoid all the hassle and have a turnkey system without downloading anything, drop me a note and put $15 in my PayPal or Moneybookers account. I will then do all the work for you. I will provide more details on request to pete@create-a-blog.net You will need mysql on your site though. Ask your web host if you are not sure.
SEO YOUR BLOG
If you use search engine optimization techniques on your blog, you will have a chance of it being listed in Google, and found by others seeking information on your keyword. Choose a keyword, and then apply it as the theme of your blog. Use the keyword in the title of your blog, and also in the body. Use lots of semantically related text and make sure that every posting you make is based on the same theme or keyword.
You should also generate a sitemap for your blog, using software found here:
XML-sitemaps.com
Follow the instructions, and copy the sitemap to the main directory in which your blog software is found. Go to Google.com – register if you have not already done so, and then go to Webmaster Tools found under My Services on your account page. You will be able to submit your blog here and then submit your sitemap. The instructions are simple, so just follow them. You will find that your blog will be spidered shortly after. The sitemap is only important if you have more than one page, i.e. other postings in your monthly archives, or separate permanent pages.
WRITE AND SUBMIT ARTICLES
Write articles on the topic of your blog and then submit them to article directories. You will get links back to your blog if you include your blog URL in your ‘Author’s Resource Box’. You will also likely get readers clicking to your blog from that link if your article has been interesting enough to make them want to find more.
More information on writing and using articles can be obtained from my website
Article Services
and I am selling good inexpensive article submission software for only $37. I use the same software all the time, which is why I decided to buy the private label rights, and sell it myself. Check it out here:
My Article Submitter
It is preloaded with over 100 article directories. Like all such software, even the most expensive which is very similar to this one, you have to register manually with each directory and then enter your login details to the software. You can also add your own favorite directories, though this includes Ezinearticles.com, i-Snare, Go Articles, Article City, A1 Articles, Article Dashboard and so on. All top PageRank sites. You enter the details of your article (title, body, resource box, summary and keywords) and these are automatically added to each of the directories you choose to submit to. All you do is click to submit each article.
You don’t need it, but I bought it and found it completely indispensable. However, that might be because articles are my main business, and you might not submit as many as I do. It’s just a suggestion, and yes, I do make money from it, so I am not hiding anything.
That’s all for the moment. I have loads more blogging tips I could give you but, these are enough to start with. Start with them, carry every one out, and in two or three weeks you will notices a difference in the style of your blog and also your traffic.
